Laser hair removal is a very common and safe procedure. However, like all medical treatments, it does have some potential side effects and risks. It is important to be aware of them before you commit to a treatment.

In general, when side effects do occur, they are minor and temporary.

Irritation and redness

The laser hair removal process works by damaging hair follicles through the application of a high-energy laser. Skin naturally reacts to being exposed to this much energy all at once, often in the form of redness or irritation at the site of treatment.

Swelling, tingling, and tenderness are other possible side effects, but they tend to go away quickly.

Discoloration of the skin

This is a rare, but possible, side effect of laser hair removal. The skin may become either lighter or darker in the treated area. In most cases, these changes fade with time and the skin returns to its original color.

Skin infection

Because laser hair removal works by damaging the hair follicle, it creates a risk of infection. Basically, laser treatments form a wound that needs to heal. For this reason, it is especially important to avoid touching or picking the treated areas and to follow aftercare instructions in detail.

Crust formation

Another minor inconvenience that can happen after a treatment is the formation of skin crust. This is temporary and will go away. However, it is important to avoid touching or scratching the skin as this can lead to scabs and scarring.

Minimize your risk of side effects

There are things you can do to reduce your risk of experiencing side effects.

Do your research and only seek treatments from a reputable service provider. One of the most trusted providers is Premier Wellness and Aesthetics Center. In addition, we provide treatments for Botox, bioidentical hormone therapy, Viora IPL, skin tightening, and more.

To prepare for your treatment, avoid the sun for at least ten days prior. Make sure that you don’t have any products on your skin, such as creams or lotions, when you go to your appointment.

After your treatment, follow your doctor’s care instructions, which will typically include staying out of the sun for another ten days, and avoiding strenuous workouts, hot showers, or anything else that causes perspiration for 24 hours after your appointment.
