Having bright, healthy, youthful skin is a priority for many people, especially as they get older and start to notice some of the signs of aging. While a dedicated skincare routine, coupled with good lifestyle choices, can help preserve your natural beauty, there are also non-surgical procedures that can give you that extra, “lit-from-within” quality to improve your satisfaction with your appearance and your confidence.

A PRP facial is one of those procedures. It is a popular, in-demand medical spa treatment that delivers that extra level of rejuvenation that skincare and lifestyle alone simply can’t achieve. It also doesn’t require the commitment or downtime that a surgical procedure like a facelift does.

So how exactly does a PRP facial work and what can you expect from the procedure?

How a PRP facial works

A PRP facial works by using your own blood to stimulate collagen production in your facial skin. First, a small amount of your blood will be drawn and then spun in a centrifuge to separate out the plasma and the platelets from the red blood cells. The resulting platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is what is then used for the facial treatment. It is injected into the target area using a microneedling device.

PRP is such an effective anti-aging material because it triggers the growth of new cells and new skin, giving you a naturally radiant and youthful appearance. The result is skin that looks refreshed and rejuvenated, with noticeably fewer deep wrinkles and fine lines. You can expect an outcome on par with what dermal fillers provide, but without the risk of infection since the procedure uses your own blood.

What to expect from your PRP facial

The first step in your PRP facial is to have your blood drawn and prepared. While this happens, a nurse will also prep your face for the microneedling by applying a numbing cream to the area. It takes about 15 minutes for the numbing action to take effect.

Once your PRP is ready and your skin surface is prepped, the doctor will spread the PRP on your face and then work in sections with the microneedling tool. The tool will open tiny channels in your skin for the PRP to penetrate deeply into the layers underneath the surface, where it can stimulate collagen production.

Once the desired area has been fully treated, you’re done! Your face may be a little bit damp after the procedure, but otherwise you are free to carry on with your day, with no need for downtime.
